The SLuM project, co-financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), involves Bambini nel Deserto as a partner, alongside CISV and MMI, with the latter as the lead. The initiative aims to combat malnutrition in informal settlements in peri-urban areas of Burkina Faso, with a particular focus on women, children, and vulnerable groups. The overall objective of the project is to improve the nutritional status of the local population. This will be achieved through three main outcomes:
- Improvement of prevention, screening, and management services for acute malnutrition cases: Activities include training health center staff and mobile health workers, provision of equipment for anthropometric measurements, and nutrition promotion.
- Enhancement of families' access to food for malnourished children through income-generating activities and urban horticulture: The project involves funding allocation to 150 families to support Income-Generating Activities (IGA). Personalized coaching services and technical and financial training pathways will be offered to IGA promoters.
- Strengthening community-based hygiene interventions for acute malnutrition prevention: Activities include construction and renovation of latrines and communal water points. This project aims to create a significant impact on the health and well-being of the communities involved by improving nutritional and hygiene conditions and promoting food and economic self-sufficiency among beneficiary families.
