Thanks to the contribution of the “Otto per Mille” of the Waldensian Church – Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches, the renovation works of the Keur Bamboung Campement have begun. This international cooperation project unfolds in the vibrant heart of the Sine Saloum Delta, one of the most stunning Community Marine Protected Areas (AMCP) in Senegal, combining environmental protection, sustainable development, and support for local communities. The Campement, nestled in this natural paradise and accessible only by pirogue, is undergoing significant renovation aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and addressing the socio-economic challenges of the area.
A Context of Great Value and Great Challenges
The Sine Saloum Delta is a unique ecosystem, characterized by rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes. However, this natural beauty coexists with significant socio-economic challenges. Limited job opportunities, especially for young people, drive many to seek better futures elsewhere, contributing to concerning migration trends. For this reason, the renovation project of the Keur Bamboung Campement is more than just an initiative to enhance tourism offerings; it is a concrete strategy to generate income and employment opportunities, strengthening the bond between the community and their territory.
The Phases of a Sustainable and Participatory Project
.
Renovation of the Bungalows
Priority has been given to the most deteriorated bungalows, located in areas particularly appreciated by tourists for their beauty. The original architecture has been preserved, with concrete elements introduced to ensure greater stability.
Kitchen and Restaurant Hall Renovation
A fundamental step to improve hospitality and the culinary offering, enhancing local culinary culture and ensuring an authentic experience for guests.
Renovation of Other Structures
The less damaged buildings, located near the restaurant area, will be renovated later, completing the overall improvement of the entire campement.
Enhancement of Local Resources and Support for the Local Economy
A central element of the project is respect for and enhancement of the local context. The choice of materials focused on local resources, such as raw pink earth bricks, some of which were manufactured directly in the courtyard of the AMP Directorate in Toubacouta. This not only reduces environmental impact but also supports small businesses and local artisans, who are active protagonists in this initiative. The transport of materials and workers takes place exclusively by pirogue, carefully organized to optimize time and resources. Workers stay on site throughout the week, ensuring continuity in the work and minimizing travel.
A Commitment to the Future
The renovation project of the Keur Bamboung Campement represents a virtuous example of international cooperation, where environmental sustainability intertwines with economic and social development. The goal is clear: to create opportunities for young people, promote responsible tourism, and contribute to the safeguarding of a priceless natural heritage. Every step taken in this project is an investment in the future of the Sine Saloum Delta and its communities, transforming challenges into opportunities and building a sustainable development model that can inspire other realities.
Bambini nel Deserto is proud to be an active part of this initiative, confirming its commitment to a fairer and more sustainable world.
