The DiCoBruMa Project
The DiCoBruMa Project is an international cooperation programme focused on supporting and strengthening the productive capacities of women engaged in traditional textile craftsmanship in Africa. This initiative serves as a tool for women's socio-economic empowerment, promoting the enhancement of local skills, income generation, and fair access to global markets.
Purpose and Geographic Scope
Developed with a multi-country perspective, the project currently operates in eight sub-Saharan African nations: Ethiopia, The Gambia, Kenya, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Rwanda. In these contexts, textile craftsmanship represents a vital component of the cultural and productive heritage, passed down primarily by women—true custodians of generational knowledge.
Despite their high level of technical expertise, these artisans often work in conditions of economic vulnerability, worsened by structural barriers such as:
- Limited access to local and international markets
- Inadequate financial and material resources
- Lack of entrepreneurial and digital training
- Difficulties balancing productive activities and family responsibilities
Intervention Strategies
The DiCoBruMa Project addresses these challenges through an integrated approach based on:
- Technical and managerial training to enhance the artisans’ productive and entrepreneurial skills
- Support for commercialization, through the creation of ethical and sustainable distribution channels, both local and international
- Awareness-raising and social communication to highlight the role of women in the socio-economic fabric and promote responsible consumption
Expected Impact
Every item produced within the project framework is not only a product of artisanal excellence but also a vehicle for social transformation: it contributes to the economic emancipation of the producers, stimulates the growth of local economies, and strengthens community cohesion.
A Solidarity Bridge between Africa and Italy
DiCoBruMa also acts as a cultural and economic bridge between the African continent and Italy, where the conscious purchase of handcrafted products becomes a concrete act of solidarity and international co-development. Through a transparent and responsible supply chain, the project promotes an inclusive economic model that places women at the centre of change.
