We learned about the case through Marie Ouattara, a BnD collaborator who is also responsible for the SaD project in Gounghin. Oumou will turn two in December 2024. She was born with a syndrome of tetraplegia.
Her father abandoned the family and lives in Mali. The mother lives with Oumou and another 4-year-old child in the house of her mother and stepfather, who does not welcome their presence and wants to evict them from the house.
Despite having financial means, Oumou's father does not contribute any expenses, either for Oumou or for her little brother. We met Oumou and her family and were able to witness the great love and dedication this mother has for her daughter. Unfortunately, she lacks the financial means to care for her properly.
In April – May 2024, the mother managed to get the child into some physiotherapy rehabilitation sessions, but she had to suspend them due to lack of funds and because of a persistent and very high fever.
Oumou struggles to feed and cries a lot, calming down only when her mother holds her, which is often.
The goal of our project is to cover the costs of the various services:
- Consultation with a pediatric neurosurgeon
- Examinations required by the neurosurgeon
- Prescribed therapies and physiotherapy rehabilitation
We are also awaiting the wheelchair and materials that are already prepared to be loaded onto the next container from Treviso, which will be inspected by local therapists who will share their use with Oumou's mother.
