The PEDALING TOWARDS A BETTER TOMORROW project in Burkina Faso involves the purchase of new bicycles for children and adolescents who attend a distant school, to encourage them to continue their studies. The bicycle becomes the property of the child/adolescent as long as they attend school; if they drop out, the bike is returned to the school to be given to another beneficiary. The cost of purchasing the bicycles is about €80-100, which is very high considering the average monthly salaries.

The bicycle is the main means of transportation in the rural areas of Burkina Faso, where Bambini nel Deserto has been operating for over 15 years to improve education and prevent school dropouts. The project was initiated by Bruna Montorsi, a retired Italian teacher who closely follows education and childhood projects in Burkina Faso. For each donated bicycle, Bambini nel Deserto will provide a photograph as proof of assignment, and the school teachers will monitor the students' participation in school life.

Even though school is over, the bicycles won’t take a holiday in Burkina Faso; these vehicles will continue to be used daily to go to the well to fetch water in large plastic containers and to accompany older students to the market or the agricultural fields.

In many countries like Burkina Faso, there are no "holidays" in the traditional sense, but only periods when school is out and one works for their family.

In the Sahel, the "holiday" season corresponds to the rainy season and agricultural work.

During this period, bicycles become indispensable for transporting tools, harvests, and goods necessary for the sustenance of families.
