Barrages, or water reservoirs, are valuable artificial water bodies that play a fundamental role in conserving water resources for agricultural and rural communities. They are designed to collect and retain water from the rainy season, which can then be used in various sectors such as agriculture, livestock farming, and fisheries during the dry season.
Recognizing the vital importance of barrages for food security and community sustainability, the humanitarian organization Bambini nel Deserto has responded promptly to requests from several communities in Burkina Faso.
In particular, the program has been structured into two key phases:
- Construction of New Barrages: In areas where the need for water resources was critical, Bambini nel Deserto initiated the complete construction of new barrages. This involved the design, construction, and activation of artificial water structures capable of storing significant amounts of rainwater.
- Rehabilitation of Existing Barrages: In other communities where existing barrages needed maintenance and refurbishment, the organization invested in rehabilitating these structures. This included dam cleaning, repair of any damages, and optimization of the water distribution system.
Bambini nel Deserto's commitment to constructing and renovating barrages has had a significant impact on the involved communities. It has greatly improved access to water for agricultural irrigation, enabling crops to thrive even during the dry season. Additionally, it has supported livestock farming and the development of fisheries, contributing to improved food security and local economy.
This project exemplifies how humanitarian assistance can sustainably address challenges related to water and agriculture, thereby enhancing the lives of rural communities in Burkina Faso. Bambini nel Deserto remains committed to working in collaboration with these communities to ensure the long-term management and maintenance of barrages, ensuring their ongoing benefits.
