In Zagtouli, a non-lotis (informal) neighborhood on the western outskirts of the capital, population density is continually growing, as are rates of acute malnutrition and worsening hygienic conditions. In this context, ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation is fundamental in the fight against malnutrition, creating community latrines and water points and raising community awareness in the management of this resource.
As part of the “sLuM – Fight against Malnutrition in the informal settlements of the peri-urban areas of Ouagadougou” project co-financed by AICS, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, the first training session aimed at the Management Committees of water and to the teachers of 4 schools, in order to inform and raise awareness by addressing issues such as: effective communication techniques with the community, hygiene of the environment, of toilets, of one’s own body and clothing and the fundamental good management drinking water and food hygiene.
The project, which takes place in a context of growing concern for the social, economic and political situation in Burkina Faso, aims not only to improve local hygienic conditions but also to address the broader challenges that the community is facing. Burkina Faso, like many African countries, faces significant social and economic challenges, with a complex political situation that requires coordinated and sustainable solutions.
In the context of Zagtouli, the precarious socioeconomic situation makes the population particularly vulnerable to malnutrition and inadequate hygienic conditions. The sLuM project not only provides immediate solutions through the creation of community latrines and water points but also engages in a long-term approach, involving the community in the sustainable management of water resources and the promotion of healthy hygiene practices.
The Non-Governmental Organizations involved in the project, Medicus Mundi Italia, Bambini nel Deserto and CISV have come together to tackle the complexity of the local situation with determination. The active involvement of Water Management Committees and teachers in the training sessions highlights the participatory approach of the project, encouraging community empowerment in resource management and health promotion.
The broader context of Burkina Faso requires an integrated and multi-level vision to address social and economic challenges. The unstable political situation makes the involvement of NGOs and international cooperation agencies crucial, as demonstrated by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. In this scenario, the work of projects like sLuM takes on an even more relevant role, not only in addressing immediate needs, but also in paving the way for sustainable growth and improved living conditions for affected communities.
